In September of 2003, NASA sent its Galileo spacecraft tumbling into Jupiter’s atmosphere. One month later, a mysterious black spot was observed on the Jovian surface. Richard Hoagland suspects that the intense pressure of the Jovian atmosphere may have created an atomic explosion, resulting from the compression of Galileo’s plutonium fuel.
